YouTube Shorts vs Long Videos: Which Should You Make?

How Shorts and long videos differ in reach, monetisation and subscriber growth — and how to use both.

By the SMMJet team · 4 October 2026 · 2 min read

Shorts

  • Reach: huge — shown to non-subscribers in the Shorts feed.
  • Subscribers: good for discovery, but Shorts viewers subscribe less often.
  • Money: Shorts revenue per view is low.

Long videos

  • Reach: slower, mostly via search and suggested.
  • Subscribers: viewers who watch 15 minutes are more likely to subscribe.
  • Money: much higher earnings per view; counts for watch hours.

Use both

Shorts → curiosity → long video → subscription. Cut 3–4 Shorts from each long video, each pointing to the full version.

Boost both: Shorts views for momentum, long-form views for social proof and search ranking signals.
