Nobody can guarantee a viral reel. But you can stack the odds.
What Instagram is watching
Instagram tests every reel with a small audience and watches:
- Watch time / completion — did people watch to the end, or rewatch?
- Shares — especially DM shares.
- Saves — "I'll come back to this".
- Likes and comments — useful, but weighted less than shares and saves.
If a reel does well in the first test, it's shown to a bigger audience. Repeat.
Hooks that work in India
- "Don't make this mistake while buying…"
- "₹500 vs ₹5,000 — can you tell the difference?"
- "Things nobody tells you about moving to Bengaluru"
- "POV: your mom finds out…"
The hook should be readable as on-screen text in under 2 seconds.
Keep it short
Most viral reels are 7–20 seconds. Short reels get rewatched, which boosts completion.
Use trends, but add yourself
Trending audio helps distribution, but a copied trend gets lost. Add your niche twist.
The pre-post checklist
- Hook on screen in the first frame
- Captions burned in (many people watch muted)
- A reason to share or save
- Cover image that looks good on your grid
- Posted at your peak time
Give it a starting push
Reels that start with some momentum get tested more. Many creators add reel views, a few hundred shares and saves on their best reels. It won't save a bad reel, but it gives a good one a fairer first test.
